The animal is afraid of dying. Man is afraid of death. That is the only thing that distinguishes us from the animal in materialism.
He has a view of eternity, but the materialist cannot relate this eternal to his finite. If he could, he would no longer be a materialist. And he would no longer be afraid of death.
Pain must never be allowed to guide us. Our actions grow out of the fearless knowledge of our security in the meaning, of our soulfulness and of the eternal unity of everything. We always act in love for everything and everyone. There is no inner separation. Pain alone must never guide us.
