The schizoid’s or schizophrenic’s experience of existence is, according to Laing, characterised by a sense of being constantly threatened, which he calls „ontological insecurity“, and is to be distinguished from the basis of experience of other persons: „When a position of primary ontological security has been achieved, the ordinary circumstances of life do not constitute a continuing threat to one’s existence. When such a basis of existence has not been achieved, the ordinary situations of daily life constitute a continuous and deadly threat. Only by realising this is it possible to understand how certain psychoses can develop.“ The permanent fear of annihilation expresses itself as fear of being devoured, implosion (destructive intrusion of reality into the self) or petrifaction (petrification through terror) and depersonalisation.
Less and less certainty of existence in society due to less and less perception of the soul’s coherence. Permanent fear of annihilation is the drive of capitalist materialism. More and more fear and anger. Less and less knowledge of the soul. Ontological security is being abolished piece by piece, since full efficiency and full commitment to the last blood can only be provided by man in absolutely restless and permanent fear of death. From which supposedly only possessions and power can save him – or infinite activity can at least distract and anaesthetise him. Psychosis 24\7. Ever more schizoid society.
