The knowledge of one’s own finiteness makes the purely earthly striving an absurdity. This absurdity is often saved by the thought of the continuation of the own work in mankind. But the knowledge about the sometime coming end of the earth and the sun makes this thought then invalid. This lapsedness is eliminated by some by the idea of a mankind which reaches for the stars and – ineradicable so to speak – spreads and settles in the whole universe. However, this idea loses its continuance in the knowledge of the end of the matter which will occur sometime in far future.
The sense of the earthly action is saved in the end by the thought that everything lies nevertheless far in the future and we do not have to concern ourselves therefore now really with it. The end of the universe, the end of the earth, our own death… everything so far away. So beautifully far away and not predictable. One simply does not need to perceive it, if one does not just commit the mistake and think about it. With the coming end, the mind is very comfortable that its senses are limited and it cannot look into the future. There he does not want to know it at all exactly and to prognosticate. If he could insure himself against his end, then that would be something else. Some would deal with the end to invent a myriad of insurance products and others would make a science out of finding out the right insurance product for them against the coming end. But in this case – the end – under these circumstances the man in the materialism does not want to be the master of the knowledge at all and to have the interpretation sovereignty. Because the result of the interpretation would be clear.
He who does not want to hear, turns a deaf ear. Who does not want to see anything, he puts himself blindly. In ignoring unpleasant truths, the ego is not above presenting its much-vaunted senses as more inadequate than they actually are. No more insistence on their incontrovertible conclusiveness. On the fact that one „heard it after all!“ or one „saw it after all!“ If it is about the absurdity of materialism, then nobody has seen anything or heard even the slightest thing.
