The repression of death is the unconscious attempt of the materialist to be far from his humanity and close to his animal self. The animal knows nothing of its death. And it knows nothing of eternity. It is wonderfully ignorant and secure.
The half-man knows of both and cannot see the meaning of it because of his half-ness. So he only wants to forget. And to forget means to become a whole animal. But he cannot. No matter how hard he tries, in his subconscious there is always this knowledge that melts down for him into a horrible „eternal death“. Thus he is not saved animal, thus he is maddened, hopeless beast. And so is all his acting and so is all his thinking.
The half-man, the materialist: he is not man and he is not animal.
As ignorant as the animal is, so knowing is the whole man. He knows of his security in unity. Life, death and eternity are one to him. There is nothing about it that he should fear….
