Whose consciousness knows nothing of spiritual security, he has nothing to remember, to hold on to when pain overcomes him. He knows only pain and he knows only acting in pain.
Whose consciousness knows of the soul’s security, he can fall back on it again and again even in the pain, which seems so deep and so infinite and hopeless, and recognize at least dimly the eternal truth of the soul and the illusion of matter. He cannot necessarily escape the pain, but he possesses, in contrast to the ignorant, nevertheless always the whole truth and knows where he goes.
