The darkness, the nothingness, the emptiness are purely a matter of perception. If the ego sees them, then it recognizes only wasteland and gets depression because of their apparent senselessness, the impossibility to act in them. If the consciousness sees them through the soul, it sees unity, tranquility and power. It sees everything and all sense in the darkness, nothingness and emptiness. Because it sees the unity, it does not have to act. And recognizes in it the sense and the security.
